A three unit, single storey development in McCrae, on the Mornington Peninsula.
This house was relocated to the Briars site and renovated to demonstrate to the ratepayers how they can practically retrofit their existing houses to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability.
The house demonstrates insulation techniques, glazing, efficient lighting and water use options, rain water harvesting, sealing, solar electricity generation and hot water and all with sustainable, low volatile organic chemical emitting materials.
Set in a forested environment in Red Hill, Banksia House provides four suites of accommodation for persons with challenging behaviours. Built from sustainable materials the house has solar hot water, rainwater harvesting, grey and blackwater treatment.
The challenge was to achieve sound insulation between suites with finishes that would resist aggressive use but appear non-institutional.
